Day 1 : Arrive Delhi.
rrive Delhi. and transfer directly to Orchid ecotel hotel.
Day 2 :
A short tour of Delhi today shall accquaint all with the cultural side of India.
Day 3 :
We leave Delhi after breakfast and drive to the Bharatpur bird sanctuary .Enroute we stop at Deeg to see the varied water birds on the lake .We should arrive at our hotel - a former palace - in Bharatpur for a four-night stay. Overnight Laxmi Vilas Palace, Bharatpur.
Days 4 to 6 :
These days at Bharatpur are spent exploring and taking in the varied bird life of the area. The hysterical wailing of Golden Jackals, wild bugling of Sarus Cranes and chaotic honking of Bar-headed and Greylag Geese are amongst the marvels of a Bharatpur dawn. By mid-morning the bushes burst into life with crowds of small birds, from wood-shrikes and warblers to exuberant minivets and the exotic Marshall's Iora, the latter all but endemic to Rajasthan. Occasionally, we may stumble upon solitary Oriental jewels like Siberian Rubythroat or a startling Orange-headed Ground Thrush skulking in the woodland shadows. During our stay at Bharatpur, we'll take a break from birding to visit Agra for a day's sight-seeing (though anyone preferring to watch birds at Bharatpur will of course be free to do so). We'll pause along the way to visit the abandoned red sandstone city of Fatehpur Sikri; Next we'll take in the impressive Agra Fort, from where we'll get our first views, upriver, of the majestic Taj Mahal. Finally, we shall tour the magnificent monument itself, built in finest white marble by the Moghul emperor Shah Jahan in everlasting memory of his wife Mumtaz Mahal.
Day 7 :
We catch a morning train to Ranthambhor. Travelling by rail affords one of the best ways to experience the 'real' India. On arrival in Sawai Madhopur we transfer to our comfortable lodge, with time in hand to enjoy some initial birding nearby. Transport during our stay here is by 'canter', an open-topped safari truck that affords unrivalled wildlife viewing .Three nights are scheduled at Ranthambhor.
Days 8 - 9 :
In order to protect the large carnivores from over exposure only two game drives are allowed inside the park ,One in the morning and one in the evening. These days we shall spend trying to have close encounters with a Tiger in Ranthambhor Dominated by an immense 11th century fortress, Ranthambhor is situated in an area of rocky hill country, clad in deciduous forest, grassland and scrub. In the early 1990s, its Tigers were decimated by poaching; happily things have now improved and we again have good chances of seeing this, the largest and most powerful of the world's big cats. Aside from Tigers, mammals are particularly well represented in the park and we should encounter Chital, Nilgai, Chinkara and Indian Flying Fox; Leopard and Sloth Bear are also present, but scarce and infrequently seen. Ranthambhor boasts an exciting array of birds too, with chances of Painted Spurfowl, Yellow-footed Green Pigeon, Alexandrine Parakeet, Common Hawk Cuckoo, Brooks's Leaf Warbler, Large Cuckoo-shrike, Rufous Treepie and Tickell's Blue Flycatcher. Overhead, we'll scan for Oriental Honey Buzzard and White-rumped and Indian Vultures, while investigation of the dry fields and scrub hillsides might reveal Yellow-wattled Lapwing and Rufous-fronted Prinia.
Day 10 :
After some final birding around Ranthambhor we catch the train to the fortress city of Jodhpur, in the heart of Rajasthan. Overnight Jodhpur.
Day 11 :
A very early start is necessary as we head north to witness one of the greatest of India's many ornithological spectacles. The little desert town of Khichan has become internationally famous for its tremendous winter gatherings of Demoiselle Cranes. As the sun rises, wave after wave of calling cranes arrive, until the small feeding area is packed with thousands of these supremely elegant birds. As the day warms up we shall reluctantly drag ourselves away to continue our journey through the Thar desert, making several short stops en route for Variable and Desert Wheatears, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, Laggar Falcon and Tawny Eagle. Late in the afternoon we arrive at the isolated frontier town of Jaisalmer, for a three-night stay.
Days 12 - 13 :
Jaisalmer is situated deep in the heart of the desert. Walking through the narrow streets of this old walled city, it is still possible to sense the medieval magic of old Rajasthan - where traffic jams tend to be created by camels rather than cars! It's from here that we'll travel out into the Thar Desert National Park. The arid scrubby desert is punctuated by sprawling sand dunes, home to Black-crowned Sparrow-lark and Desert and Hoopoe Larks, Asian Desert Warbler, Isabelline Shrike and Red-tailed Wheatear. Dry fields attract foraging wintering flocks of Bimaculated Larks and Cream-coloured.
Day 14 :
We drive back to Jodhpur and take an early evening flight to Delhi. to connect with the international flight back home.
Day 15 :
Final departure to airport for international flight.
